Lamprey or lamprei (lamprey) is the name for a type of fish that looks long and not scaly like eels. Although his appearance to resemble eels, lamprey eel is not because they have a lot of physical differences. The first physical differences can be seen in the head where the lamprey does not have a jaw like an eel, but has a mouth shaped like a disc. Lamprey also have 7 holes gills on each side of the body and frame in a prone, while the eel was not.
Lamprey can be found throughout the tropical and temperate freshwater subtropical regions throughout the world, except in Africa. In addition to the fresh waters, a small species of lampreys are found on the beach & sea. There are about 43 species of lampreys are known to man and all belong to the order Petromyzontiformes. This article will focus on lamprey alone (sea lamprey; Petromyzon marinus), the world's largest species of lamprey found only in the Atlantic Ocean.

Now let's talk about how to eat from lamprey so that he earned the nickname "the vampire fish". Lamprey blood sucking life from another fish larger than themselves. At
dinner, first lamprey will paste a mouth like a vacuum to the skin of
its victim, then pierce the skin of its prey with its teeth a little and
started to suck his blood. In addition to sucking the blood of other fish, some species of lamprey that live in fresh water life from plankton.
Lamprey have a life cycle anadromus which means they spend most of their lives at sea, but go to freshwater to spawn. When mating season arrives - which took place in March and June the species P. marinus - adult lamprey will migrate in large numbers to the rivers. Shortly
after mating, the female will release lamprey eggs whose numbers
reached 300,000 items to the wells in the riverbed that has been made by
the male, and then they die.
Eggs of lamprey later hatch into larvae that live hiding in the pile of material in the river bed for 3-5 years. During the period, the eyes and mouth suction of lamprey larvae gradually developing. After
two organs are fully developed, young lamprey fish will go to the sea
or lake and began to consume the blood of other fish as food. A lamprey from the species P. marinus known to reach sexual maturity at the age of 3 years and can reach a maximum size of 1 m.

Lamprey has long been consumed by the inhabitants of Europe and East Asia as a food. In
the ancient Roman era and the Middle Ages, lampreys are considered as
food of the elite because it is often consumed by the nobles of the
time. In
addition to eat, another benefit of lampreys to humans is as a research
subject because of the physical characteristics of lamprey brain that
seem primitive when compared with other vertebrate animals so that the
brain and nervous system of the lamprey is relatively simple.
Lamprey are not always regarded as a useful animal. In farms salmon, lampreys are considered as pests because often attack and suck the blood of the fish are kept. In
North America, the lamprey is also considered an invasive species
because often affect local commercial fish without being able to be
controlled in the absence of natural predators of lamprey in there. One
way that many tried to suppress the lamprey population in North America
is to use lamprisida, a poison which is only lethal to lampreys.
